2010 Adric by harbek 2010 Adric by harbek
Portrait of the youngest companion ever in Doctor Who, only 18 when he joined the Doctor. Apparently quite disliked in fandom, I thought he was really interesting and loved him.

Started attending school, studying 3D Design, so this was done in the evenings at my school computer. Such a big, pretty screen...

I liked him a lot, too! I don't get why he's not liked. Teagan, on the other hand . . .

Adric gets a bad rap. He was a better companion than people give credit for- flawed but noble, sometimes very funny, and he had one of the best exits ever. An unusually complex companion for classic-era Who.

And btw- lovely work. :)

It's true. Sadly he was also occasionally terribly written, and never written the same way, and sometimes (see: Four to Doomsday) he drives me up the walls. But other times I love him. Complex indeed.

I agree. Four to Doomsday drives me up the wall :( and the sterotype that he always sided with the bad guys - which he only did three times really (State of Decay, Castrovolva and Four to Doomsday). That's only around 1/4 of his tenure as a assistant.

Which, to be fair, is rather a lot. But, um. State of Decay, he didn't even really know the Doctor yet, and he was being pragmatic. Castrovalva I wouldn't say 'sided with' as much as 'was forced to cooperate'. He refused quite a few times, and when he did cooperate it was mostly to trick the Master and be able to help the Doctor. And in Four To Doomsday, well, he was mostly being naive, but then I can't really defend the writing in that episode, so I usually just ignore it alltogether.

Same :P

Maybe a 1/4 is a lot... Then again if we compared that to Turlough well...

To be fair, part of the fun of Turlough was that you couldn't trust him, at least not in the beginning. I love Turlough too though.

Haven't seen enough iof him to make a fair judgement (though I hope to correct this at some point...). To be honest any character is gonna get stabs and quips - sometimes (like Turlough) it's half the fun of it.

Oh well, at the end of the day it is just a TV show after all.

That's hardly his fault! :B

I could geek quite a lot about him. His actor is the first openly gay to join the cast! He's also the first card-carrying fan to join! And, like I said, the alltime youngest. [SPOILER!] He's also the ONLY regular companion to snuff it on-screen. :|

Aaaaah now I'm getting all excited to get back and watch some more classic Who! I started watching from the very beginning once~

Man, I tried that, but the first ones with One just bored me so much. Now I've started rather picking eps at random. We first picked out a bunch of Five ones, then we went back and watched the rest of Five's, and then I've watched a couple of Four's... Then I got too busy with school, not to mention I have 6 shows to follow every week. XD

Agh! I know how you feel, I watch waaay too many shows.

They're really not. But at least the ones with Four and Five have lots of lulz and snark. And you can laugh whenever they try to reverse the polarity (especially if it's of the neutron flow). And I love all of Five's companions (except Peri, but she's in like, two).

And still I find time to keep up with all six shows, AND watch through series I haven't seen all of. I'm currently working through Castle and Leverage.

"Leverage follows a five-person team of professional thieves, computer experts and con artists, headed up by former insurance investigator, Nathan Ford, who use their skills to right corporate and governmental injustices inflicted on common citizens." Thank you, Wikipedia.

It's really excellent, especially cause the characters are so awesome. Also, their computer experts is a Doctor Who fan, so he mentions downloading DW. And some of the fake identities he creates for the team? Sylvester McCoy, Peter Davison, Tom Baker and Sarah Jane Baker. XD

I adore this. So much. Like...I can't even explain. Doubly so because I'm in the middle of a major Adric-phase right now. I know he's a lot more flawed than most companions, but I still love him very dearly.

He matched up better when he was with Four (who acted as a mentor), than when he was with Five, Nyssa and Tegan. He got a bit resentful whenever he felt sidelined.

Yeah, I've noticed. I just finished watching all of his serials last week (and re-watching The Visitation yesterday) and I could tell the difference after watching those eras back-to-back. He still managed to grow on me relatively fast even though I saw him with Five first. I think it was the combination of his complaining not being nearly as frequent or detrimental to story as people made them out to be and seeing that, despite feeling regularly sidelined, he still cared about his friends and was always trying to save them (even if his plans didn't always work).

Exactly! And honestly, even after just seeing one serial with Peri, I find her twice as annoying as Adric. (Seriously, she was kinda painful in Planet of Fire.) I saw him with Five first, and loved him, so I went and watched his Four episodes as well. He's really not anywhere near as bad as he's made out to be, and I prefer him to Tegan (who can get rather shrill). (Nyssa is awesome though. So is Turlough.)

My brain has taken a weird attitude towards judging characters in Doctor Who: there's nobody I hate (it's more a matter of how long they take to grow on me), but there is a hierarchy of "like." Peri is my least favorite companion (for now, I haven't seen Mel yet) because she seems pretty useless most of the time, but I did have a lot of appreciation for her in The Twin Dilemma when she was calling Six out on his dickish behavior.

And yes, I love Nyssa and Turlough.
